Cara Gormally

Clinical Social Work Intern

(They/Them)

Cara is a Clinical Social Work Intern pursuing a MSW at Gallaudet University.

Cara believes that everyone deserves space to feel seen, to explore, and to evolve. Fluent in English and American Sign Language, they appreciate working with deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing clients. Cara is interested in working with individuals on a variety of issues, including exploring sexuality and gender identity, including coming out later in life; navigating the world as an LGBTQ+ person; managing stress and grief; unpacking shame and cultivating self-compassion and a gentler inner voice. They are particularly interested in working with those in and around the LGBTQ+ community, including parents of LGBTQ+ children, as well as young adults struggling to find their way in the world.

Before coming to clinical work, Cara earned their PhD in biology from the University of Georgia and a BA in philosophy from St. John’s College. Cara spent more than a decade in the classroom teaching and in the lab mentoring new researchers. They enjoyed creating environments that encouraged growth and belonging, facilitating rich discussions, and supporting students to work together through conflicts and challenges. Cara’s favorite part of teaching was building relationships that helped to cultivate students’ confidence and skills to tackle new adventures.

Cara’s own transformative experience in therapy, deep interest in belonging and nervous systems, and appreciation for people’s stories brought them to clinical work. Cara brings a researcher’s curiosity, compassion, and warmth to creating a space for clients to be seen. Cara is excited to build a therapeutic alliance with clients to work towards clients’ goals.

Cara is supervised by Kristina Dutcher, LCSW-C.
